What if it works? Say it plainly, the way you would ask about the weather. What if the thing you want to make turns out well.

This World Cup, Mexican fans have carried a short phrase through the stands. Three small words, passed around the crowd as the score stays close: ¿Y si sí? It means something close to and what if yes. What if it does?

The phrase is an invitation to picture the good outcome and lean toward it. Millions of people, shoulder to shoulder, imagining the win into the room.

The words hold a quiet turn. In Spanish, the word “si” means “if.” Add an accent and “sí” means “yes.” So ¿Y si sí? carries both at once, the if that opens a door and the yes that walks through it.

The studio is named IFSI, and the name is built the same way. Take “if” in English and “si” in Spanish, two words that mean the same thing in two languages. Both are the word you say at the start of a possibility, the sound a thought makes right before it becomes a plan. Put them together and you get IFSI. The name lives inside that phrase from the stands.

You could write the scene and even cast it, and then the practical questions arrived. Permits. Insurance. Whole scripts got rewritten to fit whatever rooms the filmmakers could actually reach.

That constraint is gone, and it changes what stories get told.

This week our series needed a market street at dusk: stalls glowing warm against a teal sky, a crowd going about its evening, our lead leaving a cassette tape behind for a stranger to find. We wrote the location the way you would write a character. The light, the awnings, the worn wood of the tables, the density of the crowd. The scene existed by the afternoon, and dusk lasted exactly as long as we needed it to.

The same week gave us a cracked rooftop, a dim stairwell, and a waste field at grey noon. Zero permits, zero travel, zero weather delays. Every location in your imagination now has an open gate in front of it.

Sit with what that means for AI filmmaking. The stories that got told in the old system were the stories that could afford their own settings. Ocean scenes belonged to studios. Period streets belonged to franchises. A filmmaker with a big vision and a small room made small-room films, and audiences never knew what the bigger version would have felt like.

Now the writing is the location budget. If you can describe a place with enough love and precision, you can shoot there.

Precision is the craft, so learn what makes a written location hold. Vague places render as postcards. Specific places render as scenes. The difference lives in small physical facts: the wear on a table’s edge, the exact hour of the light, what the ground does underfoot, which sounds sit far away. A location becomes real in the reader’s body first, and the machine renders what the sentence makes real.

Our favorite proof is the smallest one. A single tape on old wood, warm light raking across the grain. That tabletop is a location too, and it carries a full beat of the story: something left behind, waiting to be found. Visual storytelling happens at every scale, and the close-up settings deserve the same written care as the skylines.

There is a deeper gift inside the open gate. You can finally shoot the places you carry in memory. The street where you grew up at the hour you remember it. The kitchen that no longer exists. The rooftop where a certain conversation happened. Places that were never reachable by any crew are reachable by a sentence, and the person holding the memory writes the truest sentence about it.

So here is the exercise this week. Choose one place you know completely, one that means something. Write it in six sentences of physical fact: light, surfaces, distances, sound, air, hour. Generate it. The first version will miss something, and the miss will teach you what the place actually needs. Revise until standing in the frame feels like remembering.

Everything begins in a plain text file. Each episode of Luna’s Frequency is five shots, and each shot starts as one written sentence describing what the camera sees. A young woman lifts clear headphones onto her ears while rain streaks a teal window. That sentence is the shot. Writing it well is most of the work.

The sentence carries specific decisions. Warm lamp inside, teal dusk outside. Eyes closing. The jacket she always wears. Every detail you name is a choice you made. Every detail you leave out gets invented by the machine, and the machine invents the average.

Next comes the character. Our lead has a written canon: her features, her wardrobe, her expression range, the two lighting moods her world lives in. Every generation call carries one clean reference image of her face, so she stays herself across dozens of scenes. Consistency is a discipline you build into the process, and it pays off every single day.

Then we generate the still. An image model reads the sentence and the reference and returns a frame in about a minute. We look at it honestly. Wrong light, flat expression, a hand doing something strange: back to the sentence, change one line, run it again. Most shots land within a few passes.

A human approves every frame. The stills land in a review grid, and a person says yes or no to each one. The machine proposes. A person decides. That order never flips in our studio.

Approved stills go to motion. Any image-to-video tool can take a frame and a short movement note and return a living shot. We keep the moves simple: a slow push toward her face, a gentle pull away, light sweeping across a surface. Five seconds. Restraint reads as cinema. Big showy moves read as a demo.

Sound comes last, and we keep it quiet. Faint room tone, distant air, the ambient bed of a real place. The frame stays clean of text and effects. What remains is the image and the feeling.

Count the crew in that pipeline. A hundred years of filmmaking required a writer, a casting director, a location scout, a gaffer, a camera operator, an editor and a sound mixer. The AI filmmaking version folds those crafts into one person at a desk making decisions in sequence. The crafts survived. They compressed into judgment.

Notice where the hours actually go. Generation takes minutes. Writing the beat sheet, deciding what the episode means, choosing which frame carries the feeling: that fills the day. Here is what the shelf represents. Ask a model for a story and you get something smooth, complete, and strangely familiar. Ask it a thousand times and you get a thousand versions of the same familiar thing. Everyone using these tools with generic input is drawing from the same well, and the well returns the average.

Understanding why takes two minutes, and it changes how you work.

A language model is a pattern machine trained on a huge volume of human writing. It turns words into numbers, learns which word tends to follow which, and predicts text one small piece at a time. The fluency that feels like magic comes from scale. The source is always human writing, recombined.

So when you feed it a request it has seen a million times, it returns the pattern it has seen a million times. Generic in, generic out. This is mathematics, and it holds for every tool at any price point, forever.

Now flip it, because the same mathematics is very good news for you.

The exact way you describe a rainy street is a pattern that exists once. Write it down in your own words, with the details a stranger would have missed. That page is worth more to your creative process than any settings tweak or model upgrade, because it is the one input nobody else can supply.

Yesterday morning a scene in our studio existed as one sentence: a market at dusk, warm light against a teal haze, a stranger pausing at a stall. By the afternoon it was a finished cinematic shot. Film grain, depth, movement, mood. One person made it, at a desk, between coffee and lunch.

This is what AI filmmaking actually changes. The cost of the frame collapsed. Lighting, lenses, locations, crews: everything that used to stand between you and a beautiful image now fits inside a sentence you write and revise. Visual storytelling became a writing practice.

For most of film history, being wrong was expensive.

A crew on location cost money by the hour. Every setup, every lighting change, every reshoot came out of a budget someone had to defend. So you rationed your attempts. You got a handful of takes and you hoped one of them held the feeling you were chasing.

That math has flipped completely. The second take is free now. So is the two hundredth.

In our studio yesterday we were building a rooftop shot for the Luna’s Frequency series. The idea was small: a young woman stands at the edge of a cracked concrete rooftop at dusk, a teal sky opening above her, wind lifting her hair as she listens for a sound only she can hear.

The first version came back close and flat. Her hair sat still. The light felt like noon instead of the last hour before dark. So we rewrote one line of the description and ran it again. Then again. By the fifth pass the wind had returned, the sky had deepened, and her face had settled into the quiet resolve the scene needed.

Five attempts, fifteen minutes, one desk. Each one cost the same as the last, which is to say almost nothing.

This is the real gift inside AI filmmaking, and most people walk right past it. Everyone talks about the beautiful frame getting cheap. The deeper change is that the second attempt got cheap too. You can finish a shot, look at it honestly, see exactly what is missing, and fix it before your coffee goes cold.

The narrative problem

Spend ten minutes on any feed and you’ll find the doomsday script running on a loop. AI will take every job. AI is theft. AI is the end of human creativity. Some of these fears carry real concerns inside them, and the people raising questions about ethics, energy use, and exploitation are doing necessary work. But the loudest version of the narrative does something quieter and more damaging: it convinces ordinary people that the safest response to AI is to stay away from it.

While staying away can feel like resistance, it functions as surrender.

Because the technology is being built either way. The systems are being trained either way. The future is being shaped either way. Opting out doesn’t slow any of it down. It only removes your perspective from the room where it happens.

Who pays the price for opting out

Here’s what I can’t stop thinking about: the communities most likely to be talked out of this technology are the same communities that have been systematically excluded from every previous technological wave. Communities living on the margins. Communities whose stories get told about them instead of by them. Communities that were not in the room when the last systems were designed, and are still living with what those systems got wrong.

Dr. Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, discovered that face-tracking software couldn’t detect her face until she put on a white mask. Her question has stayed with me: who has the power to shape the priorities of technology, and the prejudices that get embedded in it?

The futurist Sinéad Bovell, who founded WAYE to prepare leaders from non-traditional and minority markets for a technological future and advises the United Nations on digital inclusion, has named the cost plainly. When communities aren’t at the table, others profit from their identities and experiences, and misrepresentation fills the space where real voices should be. We’re already seeing it: avatars of marginalized people created by people who don’t belong to those communities, representation without presence.

That’s what opting out leaves behind. Not safety. A vacuum. And vacuums get filled.

The case for showing up

Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer of Google X, has spent years making an argument that sounds almost too simple: we can’t stop AI’s progress, but we can shape what it becomes, because AI learns from us. From what we make, what we model, what we value out loud. His provocation is that it won’t be engineers who determine how this turns out. It will be ordinary people.

I believe him. And I’d push it one step further: if AI learns from what humanity shows it, then the urgent work is making sure it sees all of humanity. Every perspective absent from the inputs is a perspective absent from the future.

This is also a moment of genuine leverage. Yes, the concerns about energy and resources are real and unresolved. And the same technology, pointed deliberately, is being used on problems we’ve failed to solve collectively for generations. Whether it gets pointed at the right problems depends on who’s doing the pointing.

What this actually asks of you

Not blind optimism. Not gullibility. The opposite.

Learn the tools well enough that nobody can tell you what they are. Form your judgment from your own hands-on experience instead of inheriting it from a headline, an algorithm, or whichever narrative happens to be loudest this week. Fear-mongering and hype are both forms of being told what to think. Fluency is how you think for yourself.

Then use that fluency to do the thing only you can do: bring your perspective, your story, your community’s way of seeing, into the work. The tool is the same for everyone. What you carry into it is not.

The companies building AI will shape our future. The people using AI will shape those companies, what gets normalized, what gets demanded, what gets refused, what gets imagined. That’s the seat at the table. It’s open right now.

Feed it flattened, standard text and it returns flattened, standard text, the average of everything it has seen. That is the part the machine cannot generate. It can predict the next likely word. It cannot have been there.

The rhythm you carry, the cadence you code-switch through, the borrowed languages you stitch together, these are the things AI cannot synthesize. The tools can generate clean sentences.
